7 Things Sunday

7 Things Sunday : Winter Break

One. Nothing beats the feeling of stepping off a train and sneak-hug-attacking one of your dearest friends who you haven’t seen in five years (and then proceeding to do a laugh/cry/squeal-thing and hold the embrace for a few more minutes). I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT. I kept wanting to pinch her and make sure she was real and not behind a screen. By day we strolled though art galleries, cathedrals, and Christmas markets. By night we feasted on delicious French food too beautiful to eat, played games, and stayed up giggling in bed until 2 or 3 in the morning. I tried caviar (hated) and escargots (loved). I drank some of the best wine and champagne I’ve ever had in my life. I impressed everyone with my very best French accent singing Christmas hymns at mass in a tiny village church. Everyone made me feel like one of the fam. I didn’t want the week to end. It is one I’ll treasure forever. I left feeling like the luckiest little lady in the world. And I miss this one already…

Two. I spent one tiny day walking the streets of Paris. One day to experience Paris feels like a joke, but I would’ve taken even an hour if its all I had. Paris is stunning even when it is freezing, windy, and everything is a pale shade of grey. Until I was surrounded by (sometimes overly) affectionate couples standing in lines, eating at cafes, and snuggling on the streets…I had forgotten about Paris’ reputation for being, you know, the city of love. This made being a lone ranger feel a little strange. There’s nothing particularly brave or novel about solo travel. Tons of people do it. But there is something just slightly transformative about the experience. I’ll try not to get all Eat, Pray, Love here…but you have to make all your own choices, which is sometimes harder than it sounds. You have to make snap judgements about people and places. You have to be brave enough to walk when you don’t know where you’re going. You have to learn how to be your greatest resource. You have to believe no one is actually staring at you when you’re eating lunch by yourself or taking photos of a knitted toy cat in front of the Musee d’Orsay. At one point during the day, I was sitting in Sainte-Chappelle, enamoured by stained glass so beautiful it could make a grown man cry. I was thinking about my stained-glass-making grandpa and how much he would geek out in this place. I suddenly felt a sense of selfishness come over me to not be sharing this whole day with anyone…which isn’t good or bad. It just is. Paris was an experience entirely my own. I was the only personal witness to my thoughts, feelings and reactions. It felt great and it felt sad. C’est la vie.

Three. I saw ‘The Theory of Everything’, ‘Birdman’, and ‘Into the Woods’ over break. I liked them in that order. T Swift’s song ‘Out of the Woods’ kept running through my head during ‘Into the Woods’. Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods? That’s pretty much how I felt about it.

Four. My friend Ali and I attempted to go hiking around Loch Lomond this week, but then there was rain, snow, and 100 mph winds. Trains were cancelled. The sea was raging. It was a mess. Instead we visited the Robert Burns Museum and walked around the town of Alloway, ate ice cream sundaes the size of our faces, kitchen danced to The Prince of Egypt soundtrack, and watched a lot of movies in bed. We had a real John and Yoko thing going. Ali had the privilege of seeing ‘It Takes Two’ for the first time. It’s a big deal.

Five. I finally (maybe) have a part time job working at a coffee roaster/cafe in the seaside town of North Berwick at a place called Steampunk. I have trial shifts Monday and Tuesday this week! Now I can be like the cool kids and flood your Insta feed with urban, industrial, coffee-related photos…ha.

Six. I’ve been on a Salt-N-Pepa kick lately and might be in the process of memorising all the lyrics to Whatta Man for no reason other than it may come in handy for karaoke one day.

Seven. School starts back up on Wednesday and I’m not entirely sure how I’m going to juggle a part time job, a (TBD) course placement, classes, and homework considering last semester I thought I was going to die solely from the school part. I guess my time management skills are about to get fierce.

Love,

Taylor

7 Things Sunday

1. Have you ever been to an enchanted forest? Well, I have. And it was aaaaamazing. Check it: http://www.enchantedforest.org.uk/galleries/galleries

2. The ladies of Block C, Flat 3-4 signed up to go speed dating together. Quite the bonding experience. It is pretty much just like the movies. You sit at a tiny table with your cocktail and day dream of asking really uncomfortable questions. Then there are 12 rounds of man-rotation and you get 4 minutes to decide what you think of them, jot down comments and write ‘date’, ‘ditch’, or ‘friends’ on your score card. For example (my real notes/fake names)…

Terry: Postman. Really into Nightclubs. Doesn’t like that I’m not into nightclubs.

Cameron: Made a Taylor Swift joke. Meh. How many of these am I going to get tonight? SRSLY.

Callan: Likes Wes Anderson Movies. Economist. Sick beard.

Robert: Competitive sailor. Sank his last boat. Has a baby face.

Drew: Avid juicer. Runs and weight lifts ‘to the point of exhaustion’. Doesn’t really look like it, though.

Then you turn your scorecard in and they email you the next day with your matches. I wouldn’t pay to do this again, but if you’re looking for a new adventure to have with your friends- DO IT!

3. Halloween involved: A fantastically decorated flat. Air guitar-ing and dancing till the sweat dripped down… in a club’s ‘alternative’ room to the likes of Florence & The Machine, Blink 182, All American Rejects, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Will Smith & Jazzy Jeff, and Fallout Boy. Experiencing Scottish post-drinking munchies: aka chips and curry sauce (it was good, but my heart is definitely in a hot slice of Big Tomato pizza). Taxi cab foot massages…those heels will getcha.

4. School is hard. Really hard. And all-consuming. I hate it. I’m stressed. I’m overwhelmed. I just can’t even. I decided if I fail the course, I will live as a homeless person to pay off all my debts and then I’ll write a book about it or have someone make a documentary about it. Maybe all the other people with failed degrees and excruciating amounts of student loan debt will join me and we’ll be a movement!

5. On a happier note…because who is happier than Bryce Avary? He’s like the human equivalent of confetti. I don’t care how lame this is, but he has a pseudo greatest hits album called Bryce Avary, His Instruments and Your Voices and when you hear the crowd come in on each track, you can’t help but sing along with all of your heart.

6.

7. I keep finding myself wandering into this place. It’s so light. And you can watch artists at work. And it there are lots of benches. And there’s coffee downstairs. It’s just perfect.

7 Things Sunday

Goodness. I haven’t done one of these since June.  Oh summer, how you tend to fill up fast and fly by far too quickly.

One. I celebrated my birthday on July 4th! I had breakfast at La Mie with some of my favorite ladies and spent the weekend in Minnesota preparing for the nuptials of my friends Sarah and Shaun. I could not get over what a drop dead gorgeous bride Sarah was. And she threw one heck of a dreamy wedding. I was incredibly honored to be a part of it and feel that I did my due diligence on the dance floor (surprise, surprise). At one point it was only a four year old and I out there literally running in circles to Katy Perry. Oh, and a shout out to Ashley, who cut my bridesmaid dress shorter at the reception so that I could run in those circles.

Little Vivian painted this for me. Isn’t it the cutest, ever?

Two. My job has kept me very busy. Sometimes I want to hyperventilate. John Mark and I stress-eat way too many fruit snacks. But look! So much to love. And I’m thrilled to say that we met our enrollment goal, which I thought would be impossible. Yeah! Teamwork! My last few weeks working will be filled with video production, street art, a back-to-school Literacy Launch, and our end of summer open house/ice cream social (mark your calendars: August 18 from 4-7)!

Three. My UK visa was approved and processed! So, I am OFFICIALLY going to Scotland for graduate school. I leave the first week of September and I will graduate next year in June. Let’s hang out and do fun summer adventure things before I fly away, okay?

Four. I’m obsessed with this quote because I have never read anything that describes so perfectly how I feel nearly all the time:

“My heart wants roots. My mind wants wings. I cannot bear their bickerings.” – E.Y. Harburg

Five. My sister passed flight attendant training school this weekend. She’s going to be the sweetest little stewardess the skies ever did see. So proud of you, Madison! Here’s to your great new adventures.

Six. I was so thankful to be able to enjoy a weekend in the Ozarks at my family’s “Playhouse” with wonderful people. Highlights included: Games of Quelf, King’s Cup, and Powerhour, jumping off the dock, s’mores dip, late night swims to take in the starry night sky, karaoke, a giant bowl of the best guacamole ever, hours of good conversation in the relaxation stations, a group twerk-off (don’t ask), afternoon naps, and celebrating Sterling’s 1st birthday!
